On Thursday, the Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, lamented the rise of cultism among lecturers and students in various universities in the state, according to a report published by Daily Post yesterday.

What’s more, while addressing the Governing Council of Boards of Ebonyi State University and King David Federal University of Medical Sciences, Umahi on Thursday, he expressed his disapproval of the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Adding that “the strike has affected the growth of educational institutions in our country” based on the report.

Furthermore, Governor Umahi appealed to ASUU on the strike, “that there should be a way of communication for students to go back to school”. Based on the report stating that “the federal government cannot borrow such amount to meet the demands of ASUU”.

Meanwhile, he also expressed his displeasure over the rise of cultism in state universities, saying that any student or lecturer found to be a cultist would be sacked as per the report.

However, according to Governor Umahi, he noted that in our country, Nigeria, “a strike is not even a strike because when you are on strike, you cannot even get paid for the entire period you are not working” . Based on a report published by the Daily Post yesterday, he added that it was unreasonable to demand salary while on strike.
